Not Missing Many Meals

Peter King, of Sports Illustrated, had this to say today about dining in Kansas City.

"In the span of a day, last Wednesday in Kansas City, I had a barbequed turkey sandwich (Gates Barbeque) and barbequed pork (Arthur Bryant's Barbeque). First of all, barbequed meat done right is better than Ruth's Chris sirloin. Secondly, the Gates turkey had a slight edge. Superb sauce. I'm not saying Kansas City is Boston or Seattle on my list of top cities, but I am saying if I lived there, barbeque would be lunch and dinner 14 times a week. Or more."

Thanks for the props; the other day I had an Arthur Bryant's barbecued beef "sandwich," and by sandwich I mean a couple of slices of bread buried by a small mountain of beef, dripping in barbecue sauce. That's good stuff.

Kansas City's barbecue is one of the cultural pillars in this town. I just hate if someone visits KC and doesn't get the chance to try it. My neighbor, who barbecues at contests every year, invited me to return this May to his family's annual barbecue feast at the Great American Barbecue. We attended last year with the boys and really enjoyed the food and the activities, which included concerts, a kids play area and balloon rally.

These are the balloons we saw last year. A uniquely KC region/Midwest kind of balloon rally I'd say.

Okay, I've identified FIVE balloons and their sponsors. I'll admit it took me a little bit to figure out what the ".com" balloon was and after an educated guess and a quick glance at their website, I was able to confirm it by their logo.

I do see a sixth balloon that I'm almost positive of it's identity. So much so, that if I were a betting man I'd even put money on it, but there's no way to confirm it. I'll just say I'm sure about five of 'em.

Wait, you ARE a betting man. Pony up, balloon boy!

Really it's almost impossible for anyone to know the sixth, it's VERY local and specific. Unless of course you've already seen that particular balloon or found the source of the logo.

But five balloons in this photo are sponsored by major entities that are readily identifiable.

Okay... I correctly identified FIVE balloons without ANY help, then, as previously stated, had a sixth balloon which was rather obvious, although it's not sponsored by any company-- "The Lady Jester of Baton Rouge" is located directly behind the basspro.com balloon, but you can only see the very edge of her hat. I'm sure you didn't even see that one!

However, Balloon Boy never turns down a challenge, so here you go: I assume the one you're referring to when you say "it's very local and specific" is probably the one at the back that you can only see the white and red base-- it's the 77,000 cubic feet WONDER Bread balloon, piloted by Chris Sabia of Overland Park KS, at the back between KU and the Premium Standard Farms balloons. Chris and I go way back.

In case you also didn't recognize the Premium Standard Farms balloon, it's the one right behind Mayflower Moving, but right in front of the balloon named "Whatever" piloted by Amanda Sabia, Chris's wife. Her balloon is sponsored by the main event, "The Great American BBQ" whose circular logo is barely visible at the bottom-center of your picture.

Oh, and the one in the very middle between Mayflower and Lady Jester is named "Spirit in the Sky" and is from Oklahoma City, but it doesn't appear to have a sponsor.

Just in case you lost track, that's 10 out of 11 that I correctly identified. Pay up.

Balloon boy is right. I was there; though I didn't ask for the pilots' names.

The balloons I felt were identifiable were: Garmin, Famous Dave's, Bass Pro Shop, Mayflower, KU, and maybe the balloon with all the sponsors' logos, assuming you recognized the Great American Barbecue logo (the only one visible).

The unique jester balloon is barely visible (I thought it was named Lady Quinn but I didn't confirm that) and the other balloons are fairly nondescript.

Little did I know that balloon boy had connections (of the internet variety that is).

See you at the rally, the last week of May.

Do you guys have extra time on your hands?

The worst part isn't that we knew all that about those balloons, it's that all of us, Mom included, were posting at odd hours of the night! Go back and look at all the times stamps for our entries...
