An Inconvenient Bias

You have two different positions. One position says that "top experts" claim Al Gore's the-sky-is-falling environment movie is spot-on accurate. The other position quotes scientists who say Gore is barking up the wrong tree and his movie is ridiculous. What is interesting is that the AP stories that support Gore's movie are reluctant to name all of the scientists that lend their support. Meanwhile, the opposition generously lists names and credentials.

An excellent summary of this discrepancy is noted in this Senate Press release. It's short, well written, and to the point.

The article you link to starts out referencing Sen. James Inhofe as Inhofe (R - Exxon). I think he actually represents the good people of oklahoma.

This whole argument comes down to two parts: First, is it actually getting warmer? Second, do we have anything to do with it?

It may be getting warmer, but we're talking about a variance of 1˚ Celsius. This may still be in the normal cycle of heating and cooling for which we have historical evidence.

And who is vain enough to think that we're causing this? A single volcanic eruption can emit more CFC's and other harmful greenhouse gasses than the entire industrial revolution. And what raised global temps enough to bring us out of the last ice age? It wasn't SUVs and manufacturing! This planet is pretty much going to follow the course it's going to follow and the difference we can make is so miniscule that it may not hardly matter at all.

So why the big stink? Much of the environmental movement is simply an anti-capitalist, anti-American socialist movement. We want knock American industry down to size but will turn a blind eye to the pollution problems of developing nations.

I'm for cleaner air and good stewardship of our environment, but let's not get carried away with the sky-is-falling fad that's so popular right now.
